ISO 22007 Determination of Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Diffusivity, General Principles
Thermal Conductivity data is invaluable for mould design. Using the data provided by test methods such as ISO 22007, moulds can be designed that are much more resilient against poor mould filling or defect formation. The test is executed by insertion of a thin, long probe into the melt. The probe emits a heat pulse, which is recorded by the software. By measuring the corresponding temperature increase of the probe, it can be determined how much of the heat is absorbed by the melt and how much by the probe. From here, the thermal conductivity can be calculated using relatively simple mathematics. The test method is quite versatile, with operating temperature and pressure open to adaptation; additionally the test method can be used on solids. The test itself is over quite quickly, being only 30 to 60 seconds long for complete data acquisition.
The SmartRheo series of Capillary Rheometers can be used to perform these tests when fitted with the Thermal Conductivity accessory. Various temperatures and pressures can be applied so that the Thermal Conductivity can be determined at different testing conditions. The ergonomic and intuitive CEASTView software does the rest for you; it only requires you to weight the specimen. Additionally, depending on the testing needs of your laboratory, the fittings can then be simply and quickly switched in order to perform regular rheology testing.
The standard certainly belongs in the same category with ASTM D5930, and we offer the same accessory for it. However, please consult the standards documents before directly comparing results from these individual test standards. Additionally, in order to confirm the compliance of your laboratory to ISO 22007, it is recommended that the user purchase the document, which is available here.
CEAST SmartRHEO Series: Capillary Rheometer Systems
Thermoplastic materials are processed as fluids under the effect of temperature and pressure. The ability of plastics to be formed into a wide variety of shapes, by the common plastics conversion processes, has a fundamental importance in polymer science and application. The innovative Instron® line of CEAST SmartRHEO Series of Capillary Rheometer systems are designed for an accurate investigation of the rheological properties of polymeric materials.
