This part of ASTM D575-91(2012) specifies the test conditions for determining compression-deflection characteristics of rubbers based on the general principles given in Method A of the standard only.

We recommend 3300 Series or 5900 Series electromechanical testing systems for this standard. Compression platens that are larger in diameter than that of the specimen being tested are also recommended. Platens should have rigid connections to the frame and load cell, and must be rated to a load capacity which exceeds forces generated during the test.

The challenge of testing to this standard:

  • Accurate strain measurement

Our solution:

  • Accurate strain measurement - For improved accuracy, a linear variable displacement transformers (LVDT) can be attached to the compression platens. The use of an LVDT eliminates the measurement of extraneous compliance in the loading system, which would otherwise result in a reported deformation from the crosshead extension that is greater than the actual deformation of the specimen.

It is important to review ASTM D575-91(2012) in order to fully understand the test setup, procedure, and results requirements.
